mine peeled to shreds in less than 2 years
just took it off to show off the sexy mechanical linkages ahaha
you need to take off the center armrest and gear stick surround
4 bolts and lots of clips IIRC

I looked at a used FN2 at a dealer before
it was a 09 build and the shift boot was ripped to shreds.
the sales guy was saying it was a warranty and will change it for free
but he prob said that to sell the car.
but still less than 2 years and ripped to shreds... pretty poor

When I was looking at 2nd hand ones, a lot had this problem.. def a problem from factory, not wear and tear. One of the guys I spoke to got his replaced under warranty. So if it happens to mine I will be doing the same. If it has warranty be firm and get it replaced, dont except that they say its wear and tear..
