Cool Turn your old civic key into a new Type-R key =D

    TESTED AND IT WORKS =D

for all those ppl that kept telling me it couldnt be done ... I DID IT ... lol

ok so after buying the back plate for a newer honda key on ebay thinking it was a full key assembly i came up with this

after telling a freind about what i had bought ... he happened to have a spare honda key that was cut wrong

so now i had both the type-r style back plate and a newer key assembly ... hrm

i ordered some original replacement EG civic keys off ebay and away we went.........

this picture shows the newer key assembly with the type-r cover and the stock grey cover next to it

the newer keys have the metal key part built into the plastic plate, the chip + buttons + battery are all removable

so i went to work with a hot hobby knife to carefully cut out the newer type of key - in my kitchen no less =D

heat stress on the knife lol

here you can see where i have begun to work at getting the key out

try not to disturb the surface on the edge of the panel

after a bit of cutting and heating the actual key up ... it finally came away from the panel

all the parts ready for construction ...

after a bit of fideling around trying to get a nice fit ... i ended up cutting some of the rubber from the EG key so that as mutch of the key stuck out from the panel as possible

the only other part i used was the actual buttons themselves - i had planned to use the rubber mount ... but instead i just glued the buttons in with the key

this is the poxy that i used to glue all the parts together - i have used this before for alot of things and its fantastic

i used a clamp to hold the assembly together while it set

    the finished product ...

comparison with a stock key ...

    enjoy =D

i havnt tried it yet lol
    i usually drink nescafe gold

    westinghouse metlab FTMFW

oh yeah - i havnt tested the key yet either
    two problems might arise
    1. the key is about 2mm shorter than the stock one
    2. the EG's barrel might be the wrong shape for the new plastic cover (depends how flush it is - i cant check it atm)

will test it when i goto the mechanics place soon

i put enough effort in tho i thought ppl would appreciate the write up - sum1 else might be able to do a better job =D

Reckon you could make the buttons work if you had central locking...?

Also awesome write up, having an EG myself, it has always bugged my why our keys were so...plain....

Now we have something else to spend money on haha

i do have central locking .. but i really cbf pulling both apart and trying to retrofit mine into the key

the stock EG key pretty mutch voids the larger button - you may be able to squeeze something onto the small button but it will be a tight fit
i think the CRV keys have 3 buttons ... theres a spare button mould on the chip and the rubber mount - but not the cover

i would also like to point out the cost of these items:

Red Badge Cover - $30 (ebay)
Stock EG Civic Key Pair - $20 (ebay)
Cutting both keys - $15 (local shop)
    Pratley Wonda Fix Car - $15 (mitre10)
Chipped Honda Key Assembly - $250 (quote from honda genuine parts)

i was lucky enough to get the key assembly for free lol

since you have 2 sides, could you have put them both on instead of the buttons?
so both H's on either side?

no idea ... it was just a spare that a mate had cut wrong ... might be off a civic or accord ... apparently they are all similar after 2002
