Timing belt cover on or off??

Hey guys i'm thinking about talking off my timing belt cover and inspecting it (assuming i don't get it changed before then) anyway, my question is -

Do i need to leave the timing belt cover on?
i've seen a lot of engines where the cams/timing belt are clearly visible and was just wondering whether the timing belt cover is actually really important or not. My engine is a d16y4 by the way.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the noobness

the cover is there only to stop objects flying in and disturbing the belt. up to you to guage the risk. but yeh it is annoying having to take the tappet cover off on hondas to get the top cover off, why the hell did they have to make the tappet cover lip over like that.
