    96 VTi-R owners ! Petrol type? 95 or 98

Just wondering, by a show of hands..

VTiR owners on here.. who uses 95 and who here uses 98?

Curious as per if i'm wasting money pouring in 98.

    98 is always best.
but, sometimes i use 95 when im low on cash.
i read on redbook that vti-r's should use 95 and above.

I use either, but mainly 95 since I bought mine new - principally because 98 has only been available here for a few years. At times, away from large towns, I've had trouble even finding 95! If they were the same price and same availability, I'd use 98 all the time, but because only two companies have it here (BP, who introduced it sevral years ago, & Caltex, who've just started introducing it this year), it's still pretty rare.

its funny cause honda hand book says ron 91, but its bs... hondas require at least 95 to run good, which many including me found out, regardless of b-series of d-series, both require a good dose of 95 octane to keep it happy, an get better fuel eco outta a full tank

From what i know, its best to stick to 98 octane, for number reasons, it burns cleaner an has much knock prevention than over el-cheapo 91 octane.... BUT its not to say its best for our engines, as honda's B-series (minus the Type-R) not tuned for 98 octane, there fore u could b pouring it mindless into ur car, yet its not making full use of the 98 octane, advancing timing or so to make more power an torque. Unless ur engine is required to take 98 all times, it shouldnt matter what fuel u use, 98 or 95, unlike imports which require 100 octane! :O!!!!! Yes australia use to stock it, but only briefly, i think it stopped 2 yrs ago

i run BP 98 all the time of my d-series, dunno why, lol an also its the only 98 octane around my area as well, i would use mobile one but thats too far of a travel...

No, the handbook says 95 RON for the VTi-R engine. It also says "Premium Unleaded Fuel Only" (or something like that - it's raining, so I'm not going to get wet checking it!) inside the fuel filler. Source: Honda handbook, p134 - "Recommended petrol, engine type ID B16A2 - Premium Unleaded, 95 RON (MIN) Note 4: If you are unable to find premium unleaded petrol, you may substitute an unleaded regular petrol. The engine will compensate for the lower octane, but you may notice a slight decrease in power as a result." The date of my handbook is 1997, by the way.

But all D-series engines have 91 as the recommended fuel.

The reason for note 4 is that, because of the knock sensor used with the B16A2, it will retard ignition timing to eliminate pinging. That's also the reason why it's one of the few engines where using 98 octane will result in increased power - the knock sensor and ECU adjust the ignition timing to suit the fuel, until it's just below the point of pre-ignition, by advancing it until it just starts pinging, then backing off just below that point.

The handbook does show other engines that can use standard unleaded, or leaded, depending on the part of the world they're sold in. Obviously South Africa and the Philipines haven't got legislation to ban leaded fuel, because they're among those allowed to use it in the Civics they build there from knock-down components.

vtir's require at least 95. Mine has always had vpower since the day I purchased it

Why vpower and not Bp Ultimate you ask? Because the previous owner always used vpower in the car so I just carried on with it
