    S2000 rear diff rebuild

    Hi Guys,

The rear diff in my s2000 sounds like it's going to go.

Looking to rebuild it, though i'm not to sure exactly what parts i need to rebuild the rear diff. If anyone can advise on what parts i need to rebuild the diff and any recommended workshops in Sydney to go to, to get everything installed that would be great.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

What symptoms is your diff showing to make you think its about to go ?

As for parts list, it all depends on whats wrong with the diff... could be crown and pinion only or at worst you may need a new housing and LSD unit...

Rear end appears to be making a whirring noise when driving at about 60 k's. Kind of makes a whining noise at about 90 k's and up, only noticeable when the soft top is up.

Could be anything but i was advised that it's the diff?

Does it whine under load only or when your coasting in neutral as well ?

My diff whines sightly as well only under load at certain load conditions... you cant hear it with the top down but with the top closed u can hear it slightly. It has been like this for close to a year with no problems... hasnt gotten worse or better. I had the car at honda to check if all was OK both a senior service man and the forman took the car for a long drive and coudlnt fault it. They said all S2000's are noisy to some extent.

if it is whining to the point where it is annoying you, it could be the backlash in the diff is out or ur crown/pinion are worn and need replacement. a replacment of the crown wheel and pinion would set u back about 1500-2000 including labour. Not sure who can do it for you though in sydney as I'm based in melb.

First thing I would do though is replace the fluid in ur diff and have a look for any large metal chunks in the old oil. That would be a good sign if things are about to self distruct or not.

If your looking to at changing your final drive ratio, then

    Kia 4.777 from Holden/Kia Hornsby approx $500
    MT&C Engineers Cryo-treatment of gears(if you want) Approx $100
Hornsby diffs rebuild $450-$600 including a solid pinion collar, fluids, bearings, seals.

That will pretty much solve all your diff issues without being F/I
