the coupe has D16y8, the sedan has D16y5
we didnt get an EK - VTI hatch
only cxi, gli and vti-r came in hatch

the D16y8 is considered the best D series SOHC engine available
it has a shorter ratio gearbox an intake manifold that is designed towards peak power rather than usable rev range

the D16y5 isnt quite as peppy and doesnt have as good a gearbox

the D16y1 (D16z6 usdm) from the EG civic VTI hatch is considered the second best D series SOHC engine available
it has a similar gearbox to the D16y8 and a slightly better intake manifold design for all over the rev range

so the 2dr coupe VTI is called an EJ8 and it did come with the D16y8

Thanks HEAPS for that information TheSaint and Dougie

I now know the donor car I have to find in Australia "96-98 EJ8"

Dont suppose you know the transmission code of the 5sp manual that it was mated with?

BUT the D16y5 also has the same code - and this DOES NOT have the better gear ratios - its very hard to tell them apart - and wreckers never know what the difference is - they will just sell you what fits (which is every D series gearbox lol)

took me ages to find my S20 B000 box - but i eventually got one off a JDM D15b vtec engine

L3 came from the ED civic, so it would bolt up to the above mentioned engine
