    any suggestion?

hi, it's the first time writting here.

I'm noob as having driven cars for a just couple of years..

But since I bought this car,ek hatch, about a month ago, it has been making a knock when revving up I can feel it having issues..
I seafoamed, changed oil , spark plugs and distuributor, everything I could do. but it still exists. a mechanic I went to find it out, didnt give me a clear answer for it and told me to change this engine or rebuild w/ quote around 2k.

since this car has d16y4, 170k I think it is because of a poor sylinder head.
plus I need to change timing belt and clutch too. but obviously I dont
wanna spend too much money for this engine..

Instead, I'm looking a better condition one or d16y1 or y8 too. yet I don't know who can do mini me swap things and simply quote me the cost.

can anyone tell me what is the best to save money or spend worth?
and any suggest for a mechanic in NSW?

thx for reading long and elementary english anyway. thx thx

Have you been able to distinguish where abouts the knock is coming from? It could be a simple valve adjustment job, however if you've been to a mechanic and they haven't told you anything then that's a bit worrying. I have a d16y4 in my civic and it's a pretty noisy engine in itself, has done 179xxx k's and the valves sound like a freight train sometimes, but no real knocks as such. Might be worth taking it to a different mechanic, they may be able to tell you more. Definitely sounds head related though.

the little D series will go forever if they are looked after properly - my D15b7 has done almost 320k kms and it still goes like the day we bought it with no major issues (bought at 150k kms)

if the sound is coming from the upper part of the engine than i would say that the tappets just need adjusting - consider that most D series will develop a bit of valvetrain noise anyway as awaiken suggested

i would get a mechanic to do ur tappet clearances and ur ignition timing

do you know when the timing belt was last replaced?

suggesting a swap or a rebuild from something like this is a bit of an over-reaction at this stage

D15b4 413,000k's, but it finally died, never had anything out of the ordinary replaced since new though. Hoping i can still revive mine and get a little bit more out of it.

I can feel the knock only between 2k-3k when I push accel hard. its from around engine, driver side. only I can hear while driving.
Even I can feel 'tickle' from the pedal when it knocks!
btw, how much do you reckon I have to pay for doing such a simple valve adjustment job? :-) thank you

could also be something to do with the master and slave cylinder or clutch/flywheel

but i would start with the above mentioned

im sure you could get someone to do a valve adjustment for a carton of beer - if i lived near you i would do it for free

thank you, I will try tappet clearances unless mechanics cost me less than 500$ - a used d16y4 engine is the same price..
Timing belt was replaced at 90k as the log says. now its around 170k, needs to be replaced again, then isnt it just better to buy a whole motor with new timing belt..?

yeah i thought about that after the first post - but he also said he has a d16y4 - so i skiped over it as a misunderstanding

a timing belt is still easier than doing a motor swap lol

OP - which model EK do you have, cxi, gli or vti-r?
