The sound of my car idling doesn't sound to good. I dunno if it's meant to sound like that or not but it doesn't sound healthy. I've already changed the oil and oil filter and that help a little. I've listened to my mate's GSi and his car oils beautifully!

Sometimes when I turn on the engine, I hear a rattling noise. It goes away if I step on the accellerator abit.

So do VTEC engines idle louder than GSi's? Or is it just my engine? How about changing the spark plugs and get it electronically tune? Any ideas? I need to listen to other vtirs so see if mine is "normal".

Sorry guys, I know jack about cars...hope you guys can help me out... :?

is it like a tinkling sort of noise whenever u accelerate/increase the throttle? and when u ease off it tinkles back down in volume...? sounds like a paperclip being tapped against a glass?

    Nope.
When I accelerate, the rattling noise kinda goes away....
It's not just the rattling noise, its the whole engine! Just doesn't sound smooth and quiet. Sounds abit like a boat...ahhahaahha

Either needs the head checked or it might even be one of your bolts on the exhaust manifold for the noise. As for idling you might want to see if your sparkies are o.k. It;s usually a sparking/fueling prblem when idle is poor. Might be time to change the leads or plugs.

um...i kinda neeed a service as started in my sig..hahaha That could be the reason.
I noticed when i step on the gas, the rattling goes away. But when i take my foot off, it rattles again.

Prob gonna change the plugs and/or leads.

[edit: when changing the spark plugs, do I also need to electronically tune it aswell, like at the mechanics?

You mean do the timing? Yes it's ideal to do this. I know at Honda, what they do is also reset your ecu. (this topic was bought up in this forums as well.)
Also the timing belts usually go in the Tegs at about 100,000 k's. I didn;t change mine until 113,000 k's. So you might want to take that into consideration when doing the service.

um....not really timing i think. Cuz once I went to a mechanic and asked for a price to change spark plugs. He asked for $50 and i said wtf???

He explained that it includes 4 spark plugs and hooking it up to a machine to electronically adjust the spark plugs so they would work at their optimum.

I didn't really understand what he was talking about tho..hahaha

I prob dont need to change the timing belt yet cuz its only done 55,000 kms.

dood - quick question - How old is your car ? AND do you thrash it quite abit ?
AND - do u felel a slight loss in engine power ? ( like something is blocked?)

IT sounds like you CAT ( catylic convertor ) is blown ... it will make a metallic "rattling noise" when idling and backign off throttle- but will disappear whislt accelerating.

Go to a mechanic or exhaust specialist and get them to jack it up , unhook you CAT and have a look - i think 90% chance this is it

    Good luck , Ben

    OMG...u serious!?!!?
    Mines a 1998 model.
And yes i thrash it often, only cuz I cant tell if VTEC is engaged or not...I cant tell! So i just keep revving it over 6,000rpm trying to feel/hear the VTEC but I cant!!!! It feels like a GSi.

"Slight loss in power?" - do u mean top end of the rev range? Yes.

I'm gonna go check it out..u're freaking me out dude!

Ouch! A set of NGK plugs is 15 bucks tops, add in the cost of the remover tool and you have spent maybe 30 bucks total (inc. one-off purchase of the tool) . They are preset on manufacture - you don't need to adjust them (although I do check the gap with feeler guages). I havent had to gap plugs in over 6 years.

Sounds like he saw a sucker coming :?

hey blacktegra... the vtec sound on the integra vtir is very soft.. you will need at least the pod filter to hear it.. correct me if i'm wrong.. but its becoz of the intake manifold being designed differently..
