    I rebuilt the engine myself at Chris Barry's workshop with him looking over.

    I didn't do the diff myself. I supplied the parts and had a machinist make up the end caps and rigid collar and a diff specialist put it back together.

    I have rebuilt the engine and diff, added a supercharger then a turbo, replaced and tuned the ECU. Engine is running aftermarket MAP, injectors, FPR, throttle body and other parts too numerous to mention. Only part of the drivetrain untouched is the gearbox and I am building up a spare.

    I'll leave it up to others to decide where I sit on the spectrum but I feel it's a tad towards the latter.
    Sounds like you've had fun. I think you could claim you built the engine, & in fact the car.

    You can get sick of it. When I was racing the F2 Brabham Cosworth the Hepolite early forged Y alloy pistons would only last about 90 miles before at least one of them would crack between the thrust face & the web. I rebuilt that thing so many times I knew every bolt & nut by Christian name.

    We finally found a man, Nudge Smith, who worked with Bob Britton, who would grind out the area, & weld it up. This was so successful we started getting new pistons done to relieve the forged in stress before we ran them.

    After 20 months of racing the thing, the only bits left that had come from Cosworth were the camshaft, the sump & the exhaust header. We reckoned we built that one too.

    When David McKay gave me the drive in his Brabham Repco F1, I was so glad to give up being the mechanic every night.

    I would find failing pistons soul destroying. I went through a patch of blowing head gaskets that turned out to be a tuning problem. You can get sick and tired of pulling that head off and putting it back on repeatedly very quickly.

    Driving something really trick would be awesome but I am the sole pilot of my car and the main mechanic (sometimes I can trick a friend into joining me for a day) so any problems I create I have to fix.

    Just a heads up for anyone looking at the black 03 with tan interior in Vic.
    Guy was all good with me coming to have a look at the car, as soon as I mentioned a workshop having a look at the car for me he refused and said a RWC is sufficient so he won't allow an inspection.
    Suspicious, probably a lemon. Just a heads up.

    I said I would pay for an inspection and if the car was all good I would give him a deposit. As soon as he heard I wanted my mechanic to look at he didnt want anything to do with it lol.. Just kept saying that RWC is sufficient lol.
    Alarm bells for me anyway not going to bother.

    Just to clarify (we dont have RWC in WA);
    RWC doesnt check for Engine Health ie compression??

  12. #1452
    Pretty sure it doesn't, they just check the usual stuff to make sure it's roadworthy (tyres, brakes, lights etc). Compression test isn't included.
