    DC5S Gearbox

    Hi Guys!

I recently bought a stock Integra Type S, and it's been amazing!

However, I have noticed a few issues with it:

3rd Gear keeps grinding when you shift hard. I tried looking this up, and it looks like it's a common problem, however, cannot find a solution to it. I've been told if you change the tranny oil, it might solve the issue, but don't know what oils to use? any suggestions? OEM or non OEM brands? which ever has worked from other owners?

The rear tail lights keep fogging up, is there a way to solve this? i.e. replacing the seals?

This has been driving me insane, so many thanks in advance!!

    Bro,

    1. Change the oil to a GL4 approved GB oil. Go for a fully synthetic. Im using Castrol VMX 80. It was good at first but being a mineral has lost its effectiveness.
Im going Valvoline Duragear. Ensure you use a GL4 and not GL5 as it contains additives like sulphur that eat yellow metals like your copper synchros over time.

    2. The easiest way is to get sealant and just line the whole light where the housing and the case comes together, assuming there is a gap in the original sealant somewhere.

I think mtf change will only work for a little while and the problem will come back, there may be more to it. mtf change is definitely your first move though.

OEM mtf is the way to go unless you are after something a little thicker.

Pull your tail lights out and put some Vaseline on the gaskets where it seals on both sides and where it looks dried out, this will prolong the gaskets life too so water doesn't find it's way in. If that doesn't work someone else may have a better idea.
(I had the Integra fish tank tail light problem)
This works as well as brand new gaskets. I done it in my dc2r and it's been 1 year and still no water w/ factory gaskets.

Here's some instructions I found for the removal:

    1. Remove your rear bumper
    2. Take off the taillight access lids (may take some fighting)
    3. Unscrew the bulbs
    4. Remove the two screws on the underside of the taillights.
    5. Lube up the gaskets.
    6. Put everything back together.

    Hi Guys!

    Thanks for this.

Will be going to buy some GL4 GB oil tomorrow.

Any suggestions on which brands? I know DakDak said go Valvaline Durogear. any other suggestions?

Also, as I have no logs, does anyone know how much oil I need to buy?

    I'd say buy Honda MTF. You'll need about 2L... I think it's 1.7
At Honda, it should cost $56 for 2 litres... atleast that's what other cost me.

Shouldn't be that much, I just bought some from Honda. 2 bottles for $35.

Nulon Smooth shift 75-90W full synthetic. That is all.

As for your 3rd gear, sounds like you'll require gearbox rebuilt with new 3rd/4th OEM synro/hub/sleeve. Try the new oil first and see if that fixes the problem.
