    2012 Civic hatch require PULP?

    Guys,

    A simple question...
Does the new hatch require PULP?
I am mystified why the hatch requires PULP and the Sedan does not.
Both have the same compression ratio, same power and torque, same bore x stroke.
As far as I knew, both are running the same R18A engine.

The Honda website says it requires PULP, but I don't think this is correct.

    Can anyone confirm?

    Thanks,
    Mark.

Interesting response from Honda Australia when I posed this question to them on Facebook:
    -
    "Hi Mark,

Yes the Civic Hatch has the same R18 family engine as the Sedan version.

However, it is tuned and calibrated to use unleaded premium petrol fuel with Research octane number (RON) of 95 or higher.

This is done so to achieve the fuel economy and emissions standards under European regulatory requirements.

Remember the Civic Hatch is produced in UK for European countries primarily while the Sedan is produced at our Thailand factory for Asian markets.

Using a petrol fuel with a lower RON will have negative effect on engine power, fuel efficiency and emissions as well as posing long term damage to the engine.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers"

So my next spec to check will be the Co2 emissions difference between the two.

Ok, so here are the specs off their website:
    SEDAN:
    161 (manual) Co2 g/KM
    158 (automatic) Co2 g/KM
    104kW @ 6500rpm
    174Nm @ 4300rpm
    Compression Ratio: 10.6 :1
    Weight: 1245KG Automatic
    Consumption: 6.7 (automatic, combined cycle)
    -
    HATCH:
    146 (manual) Co2 g/KM
    155 (automatic) Co2 g/KM
    104kW @ 6500rpm
    174Nm @ 4300rpm
    Compression Ratio: 10.6 :1
    Weight: 1306 Automatic
    Consumption: 6.5 (automatic, combined cycle)
    -
So in summary, you have to pay for PULP in the hatch to save 3g of Co2 emissions/KM and benefit by 0.2L/100KM. No change in power or Torque.
I'd rather not pay that premium!

Hope this helps someone out there.

That was not my only conclusion. Why pay for PULP if the car does not deliver any added benefits?

Cleaner fuel? All fuels are "clean". Premium fuels have better "cleaning agents" in them.
Lower misfire? I think you need your car serviced if your car is "misfiring" on 91 RON, the fuel it's programmed for.

Yeah, found that interesting too. Kind of cancels out the fuel economy/Co2 emission savings by running on 95RON.

A driver will use more fuel when angry than when relaxed.
    CONFIRMED
To test this myth Tory and Grant each drove around a test course twice in the same car, once after being relaxed and once after being angered. Their fuel consumption was measured each time be calculating the weight loss of an external fuel tank. Before their first run, Tory and Grant were exposed to puppies, sweet deserts, and a gentle massage. Before their second run, each was forced to stand in one spot under the sun, drink caffeinated beverages, and forbidden to use the bathroom. Kari also told them she put a laxative in their drinks, but it was really just a vitamin. Kari also put rats, sticky substances, uncomfortable seat cushions, and stink bombs inside the car to agitate them. Both Tory and Grant used substantially more fuel (up to 50%) when they were distressed.
