You shouldn't have to remove the rear shelf. The whole brake light unit should unclip and lift out, then you should be able to unclip the reflector from the housing.

i spent at least an hour looking at it and trying different ways of attempting to yank it out, bugger!

is it worth doing an LED conversion? I'd want it to be brighter since my window is now darker.
Sorry for all the moaning, managed to fix it all up without any glue etc or replacement parts.
It just takes a little bit of care and it jumped exactly into place.
