Consequences of running without a thermostat?

I've recently put a new radiator, coolant, thermostat (and gasket) into my BB1 Prelude.
It has a Jap spec H22A1 motor in it.

But... I've noticed that it leaks pretty constantly from the thermostat housing.
For whatever reason, the thermostats Ive been given (so far Ive tried 2 that are the 'correct listing for the motor') have not fit very well in the housing. As in, it seems a tad too big for the "seat" that the thermostat is supposed to sit on, yet too small to take up the whole area of the housing so it does not seal the incoming water, and so it leaks. It's quite strange, and hard to explain.... my bad.

What I've been doing for the past two days, is running without a thermostat, but with stag sealant around the outside of the thermostat housing, and it seems to be dry and leak free!

Im just wondering what will happen if I continue to run the car without a thermostat?
Will it be detrimental for the car?

OEM honda thermostat?

Just did a quick search over the tubes, and I've read a few times that non-OEM ones are too small and the OEM ones give the correct fitament.

It will take longer to warm up the engine to proper engine temp.

Your temps will fluctuate more.

You ecu will think your in cold start mode for longer therefore using more fuel. You might find in winter you never get up to proper engine temp, so it will constantly drink more fuel.

Shouldn't be much... Maybe $70 inc the gaskets.

check on jdm concept including gasket.

if you get one from tridon or those other aftermarket companies they are around 25-35.

JDM Concept only gives me the option of aftermarket J Racing thermostats.
Might send them an email.

Generic thermostat is fine.

Only the seal needs to be OEM because of the shape. Generic seals often don't work from personal experience.
