    Looks like a position sensor. Possible cam position, crank position, flywheel position (doubtful) or the either of those three but rather than position it sense speed of rotation.
    The Helical geary bit is a tad confusing though.

    its an OBD2 Vehicle speed sensor, goes through the top of the gearbox.
