Oil for 2004 V6?

Hi, just bought an Accord v6 2004, just wondering what oil to use as i dont know wether stick to 5w30 or 0w40 even 5w40? Thanks in advance.

Stick to manufactures recommendation
Don't use 0w as that is waay to thin for cold start
5w-30 is a good viscosity and so is 10w-30/40
How many kms and do you know what oil has been used?
If it has had mineral oil all its life - it would not be wise to switch to synthetic

Thanks for the reply. It's only 100k so pretty low for its age. Don't know what the previous owner used but I will ask him.

I'd reccommend oem specification oil and semi-synthetic blend :P

Can't agree with this. The lower the first number, the better it is for cold start. In this case 0w-30 is better than 5w-30.
Thinner oil helps to circulate better during cold start.

I've used Penrite full synthetic 5W-40 for 3 years without any problem .

It's a 10 year old plus engine
If honda said 0w is required they would have put it in the owners manual?

0w-40 was one of the oil grades that can be used

0W 5w 10W for cold

30w 40w for hot

any combination is fine

You're correct - 5w is fine. Just saying that 0w is superior and better for cold starts so saying its too thin is incorrect.

Other than that you are correct and 5w is much better value as there is a fairly substantial price premium when you want 0w oils. But if money is no issue then you know what spec to go with

Only makes a difference if you are starting your car at -18°C. 0w is the same viscosity as 5w at -18°C, it just flows at even lower sub zero temperatures.
