Unlike changing rear main seal, changing input shaft bearing would had required a gearbox tear-down. Not necessarily convenient to change even when the box was dropped for changing the clutch.

OP: How often did you change your transmission fluid? If remember correctly, Honda usually quotes something like 80,000km which in my opinion is way too long.

I had the exact same problem when I had my 2005 Jazz. I started tracking with this car and didn't change the fluid often enough because I was n00b at the time. So in hindsight, if i change the fluid often enough, my transmission would had been well. Only had like 90,000km.

It all started when I booked in for a clutch replacement. When the box was dropped, my mechanic told me the input shaft bearing was buggered because the shaft can be wiggled with his hand.

In the end, I had 3 options

1.) Brand new gearbox from Honda - $3000 (Honda luckily had this in stock)
2.) Used gearbox from the wreckers - $700 (Needed to shop around)
3.) Rebuild - $2000 (Replace all consumable parts with OEM parts, not just the input bearing + labour)

I opt for new gearbox because rebuilding was way too expensive and the car needed to be off the road for some time. I wasn't far off for getting a brand new gear box from Honda and I could get my car back on the road ASAP. so I may as well. Although this was the most expensive method I took but I had planned to keep the car for long (like another 5years or so). I could had went with option 2 but needed some time to shop around wreckers and there's no guarantee I'm buying a good transmission. I could may well have the same problem after 3-6 months if it was a bad one.

In hindsight, I think I should have went for option 2 because I actually sold my jazz 2 years afterwards and would had saved money that way but obviously I didn't have the time deal with it as I needed the car on the road ASAP.

From this mechanical nightmare, I've learnt it the hard way to change my transmission fluid every second engine oil change to keep it fresh.

For the record we charge $999 for a full rebuild with all bearings and seals replaced (genuine Honda), reshimmed etc for these gearboxes. Quite a common thing. Replace the gear oil once a year from now on - it's like $80-$100 including oil at a good mechanic and saves you the heartbreak of a gearbox out saga. Never buy an unknown (wrecker) box - they will all be the same unless you are very lucky.

Yea, I remember Ichishima said that on a hot-version episode. I think this statement is in the context of occasional track-use. Since I haven't been on the track, I just extended the interval to two engine oil changes before changing transmission oil. I change oil every 5000km, so for me to change every 10,000km is still many-folds earlier/safer than what's quoted on the Honda maintenance schedule.

Thanks Poeter, I followed the maintenance schedule and changed my tranny fluid every 80k.

Chez00, i would go through you if you were in Perth.

If it is due to not changing the tranny fluid often enough, Honda should be liable..... I might just cut my loses and sell while i can.

If your service history has been with always with Honda and it's always done on time, you can try and talk to them diplomatically about it. Doesn't hurt trying to see if they can fix out of good will or fix it at a discounted rate.
