Yeh the solenoid kicks out (I tested it on the bench the first time I had it out ). I had it apart and everything looked good (brushes, commutator and wires / terminals from what I could see. I cleaned up the comms and brushes and reassembled, reinstalled and tried it in the car. Same result so I ripped it out and took to the auto sparky.
Once rebuilt I refitted and still the same problem. He said that the switching wire probably has poor contact causing the problem (common with older wiring). I'll try an in line push button switch or a solenoid to see if this helps. Not overly confident as there seems to be enough power to kick the solenoid out with a fair bit of force. Worth a try as an easy test though. Otherwise it's out with the starter again (luckily only a 10 min job to remove )
Easy to change the cable, but sounds unlikely
