    Well, if Kimi is getting a new engine for Indy, then he must have been using an old engine for Canada, and therefore wasn't allowed to change it after his crash (well, spin) at the 'ring. That indicates that only a failure in the engine, or some other incident which means the engine can't be used like an accident, allows an engine change.

    Anyways, check this out, again, i'm amazed by the acceleration from 100 to 300.....

    Montoya fired up for Indianapolis challenge

    Juan Pablo Montoya has had little luck in recent races but heads to Indianapolis, round nine of the championship, keen to secure his first podium position for McLaren Mercedes. The Colombian talks you through a lap of the 4.192KM Indianapolis F1 course.

    "Powering up to some 335km/h in seventh gear as you cross the famous yard of bricks, you then brake hard for the tight right hander that takes you onto the twisty infield section of the track. The 90- degree turn is taken at 90km/h in second gear and flows into an equally tight left-hander, which is taken at of 115km/h, still in second.

    "The circuit then gently bends to the right as you accelerate to turn four. You brake from speeds of around 225km/h in fifth to 128km/h for the right hander. A short burst of power takes you to turn five, a 45-degree right hander, which is taken at 115km/h in second gear.

    "Another quick spurt on the throttle leads to the long 180-degree left hander of turn six. This swings you into turn seven, a right- hander that is negotiated at similar speeds and leads onto the back straight.

    "Accelerating towards the 90-degree turn eight, you reach 290km/h in seventh gear before dropping to 120km/h in third for the left hander. The s-bends of turns nine and ten follow immediately.



    "The tight right-hander of nine is taken at 75km/h in first gear, with your speed increasing ever so slightly to 90km/h in second for the left hander of ten.

    "On the exit it’s quick on the power along the short straight that leads to the final corner of the infield section, reaching some 200km/h, before braking to 130km/h to negotiate the right hander. Accelerating out, the circuit begins to curve to the right as you rejoin the oval.

    "Flicking up through the gears, you keep hard on the throttle through the rights of turns twelve and thirteen, which leads you back onto the pit straight. Turn twelve is taken at 250km/h and by the time you reach the long, sweeping banking of turn 13, you are travelling at some 305km/h in top gear as you begin another lap."

    Maybe Kimi wanted a fresh engine for Indy? Well, the engine obviously made it through Canada fine, so I don't see the problem.

    yeah, was just trying to work out if Kimi had been allowed a fresh engine after his failure in nurburgring to get some clarification on the rules.

    a bit too much speculation about engines etc?
    i reckon everyone wants to win every race, despite having a new engine or not?
    can't really see the engines being so on the limit that they only last for one race? if the rules say they are supposed to last for 2 races it is reasonable to assume they are designed to last 2 races?

    why don't they just go back and be able to spend as much money as you want and have a stack load of engines for one race

    or here's a wild and crazy idea - make the one engine last for the ENTIRE SEASON

    or just use something off the shelf (like from a road car) as opposed to being so customised and on the limit all the time

    I am sure you dont want to see IRL or Champcars in F1 driven by your favourite F1 drivers, right?

    Montoya remains fastest as Ralf shunts
    US GP - Second practice





    Montoya dominated day one at the US GP
    Juan Pablo Montoya picked up where he left off in the opening practice session of the day at Indianapolis buy dominating the second practice session as well. Montoya, looking to really kick- start his season this weekend, out-paced team-mate Kimi Raikkonen by a tenths of a second to lead home and McLaren Mercedes one-two in Friday practice.

    With McLaren out front, Ferrari moves their way up the timesheets with Rubens Barrichello taking the third fastest time in the session, albeit half a second off Raikkonen, with Michael Schumacher in fourth position.

    However, the main story of the second practice session today involved Ralf Schumacher. The Toyota driver was just about to complete his first flying lap of the session when the back end broke away sending the unfortunate German into the retaining wall where he suffered his massive accident last year. The session was immediately red-flagged and Schumacher clambered from his badly damaged TF105 unaided. A left rear tyre failure was the cause of the incident, with the Michelin coming off the rim, losing all pressure and sending the unfortunate Schumacher into the wall.

    Minutes before Schumacher’s accident, team test-driver Ricardo Zonta spun off the circuit backwards and into the gravel. Zonta would later get back on track but was just 19th fastest while team-mate Trulli sat out much of the session as well and was tenth overall.

    Back at the sharp end of the field, Nick Heidfeld was fifth fastest in his BMW Williams, a tenth slower than Michael Schumacher with team-mate Mark Webber just 13th in the sister FW27.

    stopped the session
    David Coulthard survived a spin to set the sixth fastest time in his Red Bull Cosworth with team-mate Christian Klien in the 14th position. Test driver Scott Speed did a solid job on home soil, putting in a late flying lap to move all the way up to eighth position in his RB1.

    Pedro de la Rosa, who missed most of the first session due to mechanical problems, was back out in the third McLaren MP4-20 and was seventh fastest just ahead of Speed.

    Renault played it cool in Friday practice, seemingly not too interested in going for a fast lap time. Championship leader Fernando Alonso was ninth fastest ahead of Trulli in the Toyota with Giancarlo Fisichella taking 11th position.

    Felipe Massa was 12th in the leading Sauber Petronas ahead of Webber and Klien while BAR Honda found themselves down the order with Jenson Button and Takuma Sato just 15th and 16th ahead of Jacques Villeneuve in the second Sauber.

    Robert Doornbos salvaged some pace for Jordan Toyota taking the 18th best time ahead of Zonta and then the two Minardi’s with Patrick Friesacher on this occasion quicker than Christijan Albers. Narain Karthikeyan was 22nd ahead Jordan team-mate Tiago Monteiro.

    Practice resumes on Saturday at 16.00 CET.

    Nick Heidfeld OWNS that second sector. Lucky, 'cos the Williams' were 21st and 23rd through the speed trap. That is seriously laughable. How do they expect to compete?
