Internal Wastegate Problem

Hi,

I presume this is the right place for this, but anyway..

I have a T3 turbo off an RB20det, its in excellent condition, no shaft play etc. The problem is the wastegate will not open until about 12psi, I did adjust it as much as I could, but all that does is make the wastegate open right up once the pressure hits 12psi.

Does anyone know how to adjust an internal wastegate? I would imagine there is a spring inside, but can I take this out and put in one to open at 5psi?

Ive asked on numerous forums and no one seems to be able to give me an answer.

sounds like its abit jammed, have it checked out (wastegate and actuator)

it shouldnt just open straight up at a certain boost pressure

btw the wastegate does not have a spring, its the actuator that controls how the wastegate opens.

i had a similar problem with my old car
the spring in the acutator was rooted and my wastegate was jammed shut

to adjust an internal wastegate, you move the position of the nut on the rod along the threaded end. to increase boost, you'd move the nut towards the threaded end (i think, or other way around).

Its not jammed

Dragon: Yeah I did that, but the problem is that the earliest it starts to move is at 12psi

did u say it begins to open at 12psi?
or it fully opens at 12psi?

if it begins at 12psi then the actuator arm is just to tight, loosen it as dragon has said
if it just springs fully opens at 12psi then there is problem

It springs fully open at 12psi because I adjusted the arm to do that.

I just want to know if and how I can do something so it opens at 5psi

i think thats about right. the rb20 actuators are stock around 10psi. so fully open by 12psi should maintain 10psi. look at getting a rb25 actuator. they are around 7-8psi stock and are bolton. look on skylinesaustralia.com. they have some info on this subject

would probably be easier and less likely to cause problems to use an actuator meant for lower boost than to try to modify it
