    DIY Ignition Switch Replacement

Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Aim: To get your car running again.

Required: new or 2nd hand ignition switch, 7 and or 8 mm socket, phillips head screw driver, posibly a soldering iron

This problem is common to cars getting over or close to the 10 year mark, the ignition switch contacts start to wear, then create some resistence and heatup, then the switch melts and the contacts no longer make reliable contact.

    Symptoms are.

    - you turn the key to the IGN position ( II ) and the dash lights do not light up.
    - you turn the key to start the car, the engine fires but soon stalls as you release the key to the IGN ( II ) position, again the dash lights die.
    - as you turn the IGN to the ( II ) position you can move it slightly towards crank or back towards the ( I ) position, the dash lights will come on and may go out, you can play with it till they stay on to drive the car.

this DIY is based on a BB2 Prelude ( 95 ) but can easily be adopted to any honda or even any car. they all have the same concept with key ignition cars

this is the part you are going to replace

you can pick them up from your local Honda dealer, will cost you around $100 to $150 depending on your type of Honda

Steps: 1 Remove the stearing column bottom cover to gain access to the ignition switch, see the pic bellow, pay attention to any rubber grommits arount the key hole, red circle. dont loose it. Undo the screws in the blue circles. also undo any underdash covers on the drivers side.

STEPS: 2 Locate the ignition switch, follow the loom back to the fues box, unplug it there first ( so your working with dead wiring and switch ). Most Hondas have a protection cover over it, held in by the 2 screws that hold in the switch, in this case 1 scew that holds the switch in and another just for the cover itself. Remove these screws, then remove the screw that holds the switch in, see pic bellow, blue circles. do not discard the screws, you will have to reuse them. try not to butcher them either.

STEP: 3 Now remove the switch and the loom, you may have to cut off any aftermarket immobliser relays or key start wiring. NOTE: 94 to 97 Accords and I guess other modles have a connector at the back of the switch, which makes things easy. Resolder any relays or aftermarket wiring to your new loom. see pic bellow, its the same loom/switch as in the 1st pic, with the immo and key start added

STEP: 4 Now just refit the new switch to the ignition lock, you must put any covers back on, as this prevents shorts if some metal objects float around in there, then plug in the loom back into the fues box under the dash.

STEP: 5 Refit the column covers, the bottom cover can be a bitch to line up, that rubber grommit that I mentioned above will start to give you the shits about now. but make sure its in corectly before you put your screws in and tighten the two covers together.

    thats it.

just a quick note, DO NOT UNPLUG OR CUT ANY YELLOW LOOMS OR CONNECTORS. these are SRS looms, you must never resolder any SRS looms.

I did this one a couple of years ago and it was suprisingly easy as.I put extra heavy duty tape around the whole length it to help prevent any thieves from hacking into it.

when your ignition switch fails, you cant crank or it cranks and start when you release the key from the start position the car stalls and all the dash ligths go out.
