    Syd to Melb car transfer

I've noticed that there are a few more cars for sale in Sydney than Melbourne, probably because of the larger population, attractiveness of the opera house etc.

If i were to buy a Sydney registered car, what would be involved in transferring ownership and registration from the RTA to VicRoads and approximately how much would it cost?

    Buy the car in Sydney.
    Report it at the RTA.

Drive it back down to Melbourne.
    Get a RWC.
Rock up to VICRoads with the RWC and register it.

    Drive safely and have fun.

The costs involved would be the cost of fuel to drive it back to Melbourne, RWC + repairs (if any) and the usual stamp duty & rego.

so i'm guessing that i'm able to drive it back unregistered?

it looks like i'd have to budget around $80 in petrol, RWC $200?, rego $550, stamp duty 3% on top of the purchase price, which brings it to around $1k extra...providing everything goes without a hiccup...

guess i'll just have to weigh out the costs vs benefits of bringing something in from interstate.

I've just got off the phone with VicRoads about transferring ownership from an RTA registered vehicle to VicRoads. Here's the breakdown (not including purchase price of the car and associated travelling costs):

    RWC: $88
    Transfer Fee: $28.90
Stamp Duty: $8 per every $200 of the car's value according to redbook.com.au or purchase price, whichever is higher.
VicRoads Vehicle Inspection: $31.90 (must provide RWC, receipt including address details of each party, rego, VIN, engine number, date of sale and purchase price at the inspection)
    Plates: $27.20 for normal plates
    Registration: $546.20
    ------------------------------
TOTAL: ~$722.20 + stamp duty associated with purchase price

That's just the basic breakdown with the consideration that nothing needs to be modified for the RWC or after the VicRoads Vehicle Inspection.

Hope this helps with future parties thinking about bringing in a car from NSW to VIC.
