    Broken Crankshaft/Bendix wheel

    Hey Guys,

Was driving my ED civic to uni on monday, cut the long story short. I parked my car in the car park. When i went back to start the car it wouldnt start, so NRMA said the starter motor has gone. Got it towed to auto electrician and got a starter motor and fixed cost $330. But the bad news is the car wont start, the auto electrician said the crankshaft and Bendix wheel has been destroyed. He said thats due to raising the rpm and driving too hard. Anyways, dont know what to do with my car. Thinking of just getting a new engine. How much is it gonna cost ?? Anyone drive rashly enough to break the crankshaft and Bendix wheel ?

Don't let an auto electrician diagnose your engine. Get a Honda specialist to do it. Gone to Hanny's yet?

Nah car doesnt start, cant move only towed. NRMA guy said it was starter motor spent $330. Still didnt fix the problem so now they tell me its Bendix wheel and crankshaft. He said it will cost $1000 labour, cause i have to open up the whole engine and replace the parts and put it back together. Just thought it will be cheaper to drop a engine in. I serviced the engine every 5k been in family from pretty much new. Got all the services done and timing belts changed etc. Just guess ive been driving it too hard, enough to break a crank shaft i find it hard to believe.

Crankshaft doesn't break unless you changed the crankshaft seals and replaced them improperly. You spin bearings and stuff, but not break crankshafts and not with an N/A engine.

Replace your engine if you have to, but don't get cheated out of $1330 by NRMA and the auto electrician and still not have a drivable car at the end.

Hey, ive got one of the possible answer for your car.. ur crankshaft might be rounded off at the tip so the pulley doesnt stay on ? so it wont start all the belts fell off right?

well you can drop by GPC and ask them for a quote.
there prices for a SI engine + labour = about 1200 at most and thats replacing all those other little things too. worth.
better then going to some dodgey mechanic and forking out 2 grand on a motor thats crap..

    do i get rep?

Yeh i think im gonna get a new engine.

This is what the auto electrician told me. The starter motor there is a gear wheel, it goes into the the engine and rotates the Bendix wheel and comes back. The Bendix wheel teeth are broken, and the bendix wheel is connected to the crank. Quite pissed of i spent $330 on a starter motor that wasnt gone at all. Anyways, calling up wreckers to find a engine.

The Bendix wheel is attached to the fly wheel mate. The starter motor there is a gear wheel, it goes into the the engine and rotates the Bendix wheel and comes back.
