built D vs B18C (for 80% street 20% off road)

I need some advice on my future mods.

I know that there are enough info on OH but not much of them explains

    what I want.

Any car can be tuned to any power desired, only money is in the way.

If i had another car then I wouldnt have any problem but since its my only car, I need a car that is VERY drivable.

since some extra weight on boot + future sound deadening plan, I want some more power, but nothing too serious.

All i want is enough power to have time to time traffic light dash +

    track 1~2 times a year.

I still want around 3~50 kg sound deadening...

    option 1. build d16y

    y8 head + crower stage 2 + cam gear + pm6 piston + pnp + basic ihe

    Expect around 2~3k

    option 2. b18c

doesnt have to be type r as cost jumps up to high.
    still expect 3~4k ???

    ecu upgrade for both...

Now... I have been thinking about this for long time and thought of few cons...

    option 1-------------------------------------------------------

    - as I am willing to keep audio so building d16y may be off track?
I am guessing it will still be too heavy.
    - will not sound as good as tuned dohc vtec... READ my signature...
    - need extra work for 8k redline... b18c starts off from there...
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    option 2-------------------------------------------------------

-having stock b series for few grand is bit off....
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

As looks and sound (audio and engine note) is my best interest, I dont

want my car to have just those too. need little more power.

    hoping for around 100~120kw@wheels.

basically i want mild tuned type r power for as cheap as possible.

Or maybe neither of them will do what I need?

what really concerns me is low-mid range performance.

Not expecting for v8 torque, I just hope I dont end up having a car

that will eat type r's and gets eaten by 2+ liter sedans on streets.
(lack of torque makes my right foot go deeper just to match speed with
other sedans. NOT talking about street racing....)

I really dont believe in highest power figures, I see many lower powered but high potential track cars.

any alternative ways? cheaper the better.

    any advice is my gain.

Your sticking NA with the D? If so, forget about it, get the B swap, in the end it will be cheaper and most probably faster then the built D completely stock. Turbo a built D with that setup, and we are getting serious, Just talk to people like Weq who have a built turbo D. My turbo D is almost on the road, not too long now, next week maybe,

Is your D16y the SOHC or DOHC version?
If it is the DOHC, it can be done up for high power at high RPM. But drivability is not retained if you plan to extract above 180hp from it.

The B18C (any version) on the other hand have both drivability and power out of the box. So you're better off doing a conversion from the viewpoint of costs, engine wear (lower RPMs for the same performance and day to day driving, especially if you have to slip the clutch at high RPM to get hte car moving off for normal driving) as well as insurance.

    turbo d>b18c>>>>n/a built d

If you want to make power with a d series, the only way to do it is with forced induction. You're just wasting a lot of time and money if you're trying to build an n/a d

since you have a d16y sohc ~ there isnt any bolt on mods that will make it fast at all.
As others have said ~ either turbo it with light boost for fun or put $5k+ into a b18c conversion.

with all that sound gear your just wasting your time. even with a b18CR, your car won't really be that fast. It's pretty hard to have both in a Honda, cause honda's key is to rely on it's lightweight.

    ..

    hm...

Infact I am pretty happy with what I have as its a 88kw shitbox with audio

and 50/50 with stock/vtir's. (dont ask me how...it happened all along)

At the moment I am saving up for a nice coil over and get rid of the stupid dobinson springs....

The reason I wanna go n/a is that I drove s15 with highflow, i/c, turbosmart boost...... common setup, everytime turbo kicks in, the car felt like going out of control. Nothing I would go for.
(stock s15 was nice but still didnt like the car too much)

If I go turbo and give around 7psi with stock internal, will I have the same traction problem? As 7 psi with stock internal will give around 130kw@ wheels?

Only if my car was FR.... still big question mark on turbo'd FF's....

btw, I admire your car barefootbonzai

i like how you listed out all your needs, purposes, etc. It makes helping you a lot easier. Instead of those noobs just going worked D-series vs B-series, which is better??

Well i'm very interested to see the replies cause i'm pondering on sticking with the D or going with B. and i'm big on car audio too so the extra kilos is essential as well. no pt. going fast when the car has no BASS!
