I guess there are 2 questions raised here...
whether the CAI does anything...
and whether the CAI sounds 'louder'...
I have the mugen CAI, and it sounds great. Its not about being 'louder'; but the car sounds 'raw' and feels sportier! On track days, people often think that I have a set of full exhaust.
Functionally (and subjectively) it seems to improve low end response. According to one of the japanese mags (HyperREVs I think), the mugen CAI is one of the few add ons that actually increase horses.
Look at the later versions come up by J's racing etc, they have similar designs.
IMO a AEM/Injen CAI setup will sound very loud, compared to the boxed setups like the Mugen/J's Racing, but the Mugen and J's racing should performe better at the higher end. The scoop will catch more air while moving then the Filter behind the front bar.
However the sound that the AEM/Injen give you is unbelieveable. Heres a clip of my car with a AEM cai. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5pA3MQYMRc
It might not be an s2000, but it should sound pretty similar.
And You can get the CAI from here. http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60656

two things i want to do extra to it is fabricate a shield around the motor and some flexi tubing to direct cold ir to it, but in this cold weather its working heaps better than the standard box..!!
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.
U'd be better of sheilding the filter itself than the engine, but like vyets said its gonna heatsoak like a muthafcuker. IMO a pod on a stick is not a good idea no matter how good the sheilding. The metal pipe going into the plenum could do with a good HPC also, that might help keep temps down.
