    Exclamation Removing Head unit

    Hey guys,

I want to change my existing MD head unit on my 99 civic to my pioneer CD head unit. But the problem is I can't seem to get the MD head unit out!

See pic below. I've removed the cover that surrounds the edges of the head unit to reveal some openings. I used a thin metal object to try to pry/pull it out, but it still wont come out. It just moves slightly as if it would come out easily, but then doesn't. I've also removed the display face to see if there's anything under there, but nothing.

Is there something I'm missing? or is there a latch i need to press or what?

    Please help. thanks in advance.

    Here's a pic:

headunits come with keys that slide into the side and u basically pull it out with the keys? they kinda look like really thin/long house keys, i've got a pair but not sure whether they'll work but u can bring it over to try if u want

Thats rite, you will need the "key" to suit that type of head unit. I would try and get ya hands on a mate who has some kenwood ones to see if they will fit in.

i had same problem with my mates headdeck..

    1. get a flathead (x2)
    2. put the flathead on the metal left and right of deck..
    3. slowly pull the flathead towards you

and booom the whole deck will come off.... dont rush it u will snap the metal parts off so slowly and it will be all fine

thanks guys, i've found a key:

but i have only 1. i also downloaded the manual, and it says i need 2. i will try the screwdriver method or butter knife or something long, thin and flat.

if all else fails, i'll take it to kenwood or a car audio shop. thanks again.

check the back of the headunit to see if it is bolted in aswell. Some hondas are bolted into the back and held in with one bolt

Thanks guys, i actually called Kenwood and i went over to their HQ and picked up a set of keys.
I put these keys at the side and moved them up and down, squeezed them inwards and outwards, tried everything, but it just wont come out.
My only conclusion is that it is bolted in at the back, like another member had poitned out.

How do i access this bolt and get the head unit out? Do i need to take off the entire dash? I'm not really qualified or know how either.

i downloaded a manual of the HU and here are a couple of pics that show the installation and removal of the HU, which might help.

    Thanks for any advice. cheers
