    B16A or B18C?

    Hi Boyz & Galz,
Well, currently i'm considering an engine conversion on my 96 VTI honda civic (D16y) since my damm tranny given up the ghost. I have being quoted $3000 for a gear box rebuild and clutch from a honda dealer while around the $1500 from a gearbox specialist workshop. But after talking to a few mates, an engine conversion is the way 2 go, seeing that you can pick up a B16A for the 2k mark. Anyway, would it be a worthwhile conversion, or should i go for the B18C (typeR) which i herard is around the 5K mark...Anyway i would like your opinions on the pros and cons of the engines, ease of conversion and most importantly the costs involved???
    Cheers

    same basic swap details,

really just a price difference - which reflects the performance of each engine

IMO - you NEED to get a front cut, do not just buy a 'conversion package'

the cost of conversion could be between 2000 and 10000 depending whre you go and how good a job they do...

and yes - an engine conversion 'looks' like it could cost similar amounts, but definitley wont...

Yeah, as tinkerbell said, both are as hard/easy to convert in as each other - prices vary by a lot though.

But, conversions are not cheap - budget alteast $3000 for a good condition half cut B16a.... installation costs depend on how good you and your mate sare - However, if you are going to do it, make sure you do it properly - done right it will save you thousands compared to if you stuff one thing up - it could be never ending

Well from wot i hearing, an engine conversions is gonna cost an arm and a leg.. the only reason i considered doin an engine transplant was that I for the price was was goin 2 get my gearbox rebuilded i might as well spent that money on a front cut B16A...so you guys don't recommend doin it???

hahah well I recommend doin it - you need $4-5,000 to complete a B16A swap..

BUT I mean what happens if you get A B16A front-cut or do the swap to find that the B-series Gearbox needs a re-build.. THEN you are in deep doo-doo.

so basically IMO, if you can afford the cash, do it !!

drive an EG with a b18c/b16a and you'll see why theres a reason to do it.

But just plan ahead and make sure you get your stuff from a legit supplier just in case something doesnt work then you can return it.

Well think about the other costs too.. insurance, mod plates and especially MODICATIONS!! who the hell is gonna be happy with a stock motor! haha theres no stopping.. set yourself some goals first.. how fast? what you want and how much you want to pay.. that should help you.

You shouldnt generalise mate. I got my swap/installation and my bottom end rebuilt for a decent price (much less than 10K). If someone ends up spending big is because they:

    1. didnt plan ahead or
    2. got ripped off or
    3. didnt plan ahead and got ripped off
