    performance chips

ok we have all seen these "performance chips" on ebay

from basic air sensor (resistor type) chips that fool the map or maf sensor to the more sophisticated chips that seem to promise you everything from 0 to 1,000 hp gain and save fuel etc etc etc.

there are generic ones, and ones who claim to be for your specific model car.

has anyone tried any of these?

is there any credibility to these ?

are they safe ? ie wont harm the car comp or sensors.

before anyone else says - they are not safe and do not increase power or save fuel etc. They are a rip off and a waste of money so dont even bother.

Give me your money and let me spit a little into your fuel tank. That should cause a little less damage than those chips. BTW, ask dsp26 on his experience. He has tried the more "sophisticated" rom chip.

    lol...

too much trouble than their worth.... the $12 has probably cost me over $1k in 6months from bad fuel economy... plus you need to invest $20 extra for the socketing kit anyway. i'm sure those spoon/mugen/skunk2/etc roms are legit but you gotta have the internal components those 'tunes' were programmed for.

    - was getting 300km/42l
    - shit a/f curve on dyno + o2 sensor permanently switched off (ecu running closed loop even on cruise)
    - noticable loss of bottom end for an arse feeling gain in top even even if marginal
    - vtec x-over lowered to 5,200rpm.. sure you feel the "kick" but that kick is actually a loss in power as it is no longer optimum... this can be seen from my dyno
    - redline raised to 9,200rpm.. sure it was fun, sounded cool, surprised a few people and my engine surprisingly survived 6months of 9,200rpm abuse.... but again theres no power up there, dyno shows a steep dip in power anyway after ~8000rpm....

ECU-MAN kindly provided me a stock rom as i wanted to keep the socketing for future crome use..

benn/aarrong: you guys should seriously make a sticky about this in this section... this question comes up weekly... or even a "NO NO Modifications list".. i will gladly make backed up comments on shit like rare earth magnets for fuel lines, hiclones, iat resistors, roms/chips/etc...

Hmm, how about you collect your posts and start a new thread on the "waste of money modifications" and I'll sticky it in the noob forum?

mod may be no good for performance, but it seems like a possible increase in fuel economy for the average joe city driver (according to article). but uses extra fuel in high load high rpm situations.

only downpoint is that u have to use higher RON fuel so while u may only spend minimal in the mod and save minimal fuel in city / suburban driving, u will end up paying more because premium fuel costs atleast 8c per litre extra.

and on a 65litre tank thats $5.20 extra each time u fill. i doubt this mod will save u that or more.
