Compression rings are good but your oil rings might be a little worn out. Very common to blow a little smoke at that high RPM, but if it's blue + white it could be both oil and coolant.
How much oil are you losing? What oil and thickness are you using?
And are you losing coolant too?
The muck in the picture just looks like regular condensation to me.

Oh and for a rebuild job you're probably looking at at least $1,000 for a dodgy backyard job or $2,000-3,000 for a good job. Gaskets/seals, fluids, bearings, machine shop labour (cleaning, examining parts, decking, potentially re-boreing, honing etc), disassembly/reassembly blah blah.

So far I've done an oil change and ran a compression test, it returned 170 180 170 180, through a bit of research it seems I'm likely looking at worn piston rings and blown headgasket??
Nevertheless I'm all ears to opinions, this car is intended for the track, I really only bought it for the chassis (intending for a conversion) although it would have been nice to get some track time with the D series, I will weigh up how much it will cost me to fix and see if fast tracking the engine conversion would be the more economical solution.

be sure to change idlers seals and water pump any of these items fail ur back to square one or some bent valves

that's absolutely oil, could be leaking through the exhaust valve or, worn oil piston rings.

blueish white smoke is oil smoke.
But seriously, 220k kms, that sort of wear is to be expected if it wasnt maintainted properly in the past.

I'm currently using 10 - 40w castrol magnatec, I haven't checked how much oil it's consumed as I don't drive it much (project car)
Coolant levels look okay, oil doesn't look milky and coolant is still green.
If it's not a DIY job, I wouldn't bother fixing it, I'll look for a b series conversion.. I was just hoping I could hit the tracks with the D16 a few times before I source a B18.
Personally speaking I don't even care if it blows, I'll just be annoyed if it does so at Winton as it's a $600 tow home (lesson learnt in my S14).
Would using thicker oil help?

Yes it would. My D16Y1 was blowing smoke on VTEC with Magnatec 10W-40 also. Compressing 180-175-180-185. Moved to Penrite 10W-50 full synthetic with the zinc additive to protect against camshaft lobe wear.
Considerably less smoke now. I only got back 2L on my last service (4,800KMs) from a 3.3L capacity. Will be interested to see what I get back next service with the Penrite.

and i might add, there was fuel coming out with the oil!

Zinc additive is already in the oil sold by Penrite. You just pour it in

thanks for offer, but if i had to replace the engine I would go B series :P
