Air conditioning re-gass

So was going to get this done, but the bloke at Natrad told me that it is illegal to re-gass my aircon without changing my reciever dryer. This is news to me, as in the past i've gone and had it re-gassed no questions asked.
It's an extra 130-odd to get the reciever dryer, so obviously i'd rather not have to buy it, so what is the situation? do i actually have to purchase a new unit?

Ive had my aircon regassed several times in my previous car (306 s16) when i was trying to source a leak in the system. And i never needed to change the reciever dryer? Maybe he said the reciever dryer needs changing coz its leaking or something? The illegal part of his comment could be because the Freon gas in the system might be leaking out into the atmosphere, and that can damage the ozone layer - and its probably illegal for an aircon specialist to leave a leak like that unchecked.

This would depend on how old your car is i think. If they are regassing it with the same gas your car came with R134a, there is no need to change the dryer. If you are getting it converted from the old system R12 to R134a then the reciever would need to be changed as well as the oil and seals in the system but since you have a VTiR Integra you wouldn't have this problem. Its pre 1990's cars that use the old refrigerant.

yeah, my car is running r134a... the bloke told me it was illegal to re-use the unit.

oh well.


in other news: the system is gassed up and everything seems to be hooked up correctly, but the compressor won't kick in when i switch the aircon on. if i conect 12v up to it, it does engage however. so i think there is some sensor that is not letting it come on.

ideas anyone?

Im not entirely sure. But if you want a second opinion you can try T&K Auto Electrical on Blaxcell Street in Granville. Their number is (02) 9637 3587. Its a smallish business, but the guy there is very knowledgable when it comes to aircons, maybe he can give you some insight. He helped me with a problem i was having in my previous peugeot's aircon, when most other AirCon dudes just shrugged their shoulders and gave up.

you must change the reciver dryer every time your remove the gas from the AC system.

Just goto another place and get a second opinion......but if ur using the old system u should change it...cause most places will tell u to change it anyways!

so whats the deal if u have the old gas (r12) in the old car?
can u get them regassed? or does it have to convert to the new gas?
if so how much would the convertsion be?
