Redbook isn't the only site thats wrong. Another site (Carsales??) had a mojor error calling the Vti DOHC VTEC when it clearly isn't.

The Vei (VTEC-E) I strongly doubt is 96kW because I drove one awhile back and it had absolutely NO POWER at all. Felt more like it was near the 60-70kW mark.

lol so much misinformation here, ...
i dont want to unjumble the mess, i just took offense to wynode calling the VEi 's SOHC vtec the same as the d16y1. The VEi's vtec actually works in the low rev range (hence why its called the econimical version), they use an econmoney cam profile down+running only 12 valves and then the standard cam/16vavle kicks in up high, the opposite of most normal vtec varients.

Actually, i'll take a stab at sorting this out. Amazingly enough, all u guys are RIGHT. There was a 1.5L SOHC VTEC-E and VTEC AND CARBY (dual and double barrel) engines, putting out around 66kw and 96kw (dont know carby specs) respectivly. ALL are named D15B's (honda wasnt very inventive in those days) and amazingly enough, the VTEC varient puts out the same power as its 1.6L SOHC VTEC counterpart (d16y1/d16z6).

In the end guys think as vtec as being implemented in 3 stages:
    1) Economical version: SOHC VTEC-E
    2) High output version: SOHC VTEC
    3) Very high output version: DOHC VTEC

I never said such a thing

You guys should take the time to read the Sticky in the Tech forums

VTEC-E can be summarized as: allow extremely lean fuel-air mixture at low RPMs in order to increase fuel economy. In other words, VTEC technology is used to optimize different ends of the RPM range in the two different implementations
