all dealers sell for a profit but i agree that some cars at some dealers are rediculously overpriced. a stock 5th gen lude vti-r with 100000k's on it for $23k anyone?
its really up to the buyer to find a car at a good price and good bargaining skills are always useful
Dealers are more expensive, although I got my 02 7th civic for a decent enough price 16K for a car with just under 50K on the clock, they threw in extra 3 year warranty and a new car alarm system for it. But I suppose the selling point was that I was able to check the car out before the dealer cleaned it up.
I am kinda glad I bought it off them, because after I got it a problem with the power steering appeared. These guys fixed it for free (they kept on replacing parts until it was fixed) and supplied a rental car with no extra costs. I reckon the service was worth the extra
The thing I really hate about dealers is that they are always advertising cars as the wrong trim level. I can't believe the number of times I have seen VTi or even CXi Civic advertised by dealers as a VTi-R. And when you send them an email about it to find out what the go is they never even respond.
Generally dealers cars go for around 20% more than the exact same car on the private market. So if you bought a $20000 car from a dealer you have just forked out around $4000 more than you would have if you bought it privately. Then you have got to ask yourself what have I really got for that extra money. (not much if you ask me). You might have got yourself a small warranty. But if you had bought privately you would then have that $4000 you saved to spend on any repairs and unless you need a complete engine rebuild your unlikely to come anywhere near spending that much on repairs. The other BIG disadvantage of buying a car from a dealer is that you never get to meet the previous owner. When buying privately you can ask the owner lots of questions about the history of the car including servicing etc.
