i think the problem is on something else - not the tappets too
But did you adjust the tappets when the engine was COLD ?
Have you ever adjusted the tappets before ? Made sure the rocker arm was secure ?
Tried a ECU test to see if a sensor somewhere is faulty ?

ALSO - are your TYRES low on air pressure ? This can be a common thing for more consumption...
