Thread: BP Fuel

    BP Fuel

    Hi guys,

Just came from the Fuel servo, BP, and they had 3 different types of unleaded

Anyway, I know the "ultimate" is the new fuel at 98 Octane, and the old Premium is at 95. The price difference is 6cents!!! Now in melb, Ultimate goes from about 105 - 115.. which is a lot!

Anyway, is there much diff between 95 and 98? Don't want to sound cheap, but I can travel >1000kms in a week, so this will make a huge diff in cost.

I'm not comparing shell vs mobile vs bp. Just want to know what you guys think of the octane ratings.

    Thanks.

Our cars are detuned anyway, it requires 95 octane only, so don't worry about it

More octane and more oxygen in 98 RON Ultimate
    Whch means more horsepower
Which means do don't have to use as much throttle when driving. Doesn;t help if you just floor it all the time like me...
Personally, in Sydney, the 98ron fuels are cleaner, and are used at as high a frequency as regular unleaded. MOST service stations in Sydney that are shell or BP actually have the 98RON fuel in there, they just haven't changed the labelling on the servo...

Anyhoo, Ulimate is the same as Optimax - both are made in the same refinery, no matter where in Australia you live - only difference is who makes it on either end of the country

Also - it is important to only use BIG servos as they turn over more fuel, therefore they need to get more fuel in - for quality, you want the freshest fuel you can get. Small servos turn over less of the High Performance fuel, and therefore, it gets old and crusty - bad news sometimes.

In all honesty, my car runs better on the 98ron than it does on the 95 - no miss at all on the engine. However, on newer low perofmance engines, 98 ron is not really worth it - it is debatable though.

IMO - only use 98ron. Why?? Better fuel and th more people sue it, the lower the price gets

Chook you bring up an interesting point. I too am very picky with going to servos who are constantly busy to get the "freshest" fuel.

However in saying this...... if we look at the control fuel for the V8 Supercars, "Optimax", since it is a control fuel a batch is taken at the start of the season and stored to last throughout the entire season, so there is no variation/advantage........ everyone uses the same fuel with possibly the same level of denaturing as the season progresses.

On the optimax FAQ's optimax is rated at 98.4 RON, and is supposed to quite stable to the point that it will maintain a min of 98 RON for a year providing that it is stored accordingly.

BP Ultimate is always the cheapest when I compare it with Optimax and Synergy 8000 (all those servos are around my area), BP wins hands down in that case.

    not really..
    i reckon optimax is cheaper...
you drive into Shell down at cabra...
optimax averages around $1.07c per litre depending on the day.
drive into BP in cabra, ultimate averages around $1.20c....
now thats a whopping 13c difference.

your topping your tank till about 43-45litres.... 45 x 13c
thats about 6 bucks your saving per tank!. this is in a 4cyl car as well

My Pref is BP - Mobil - Optimax.

Optimax feels sluggish (for me anyway).
