to answer your d2 knocking question.
my advice is to jack up the car each end at a time and using the c spanners and other tools, make sure all the locking rings and bolts are tightened securely.
if the problem persisted it does sound like pillowball top noise but afaik only the late model dc5, ep3 etc use mcpherson strut suspension which can run pillowball camber tops.
I have a mate with Cusco pillowball camber tops for lancer/evo/fto that also made this noise after a while. This is a disadvantage of the pillowball design.

i dont know what generation d2 these are because the hub knuckle part is secured using allen bolts.
current generation d2/ksport/g4 use an upper and sometimes lower threaded locking ring which is use the C spanner to turn.
these drifters spin full lock and drift into some sick ripple strips. its no good for any suspension system.
in motorsport things break.
this is the first document case of piston rod snap i have seen. I can only assume there are many 1000s of people in Australia who use non japanese coilovers without an issue on the many brands of car you can buy in Australia. Dont lose too much sleep on it.
