yep head gasket... no point doing any tests... you described all the symptoms already
i can do a compression check for you (not a leakdown test) and prove it.
excluding a full rebuild, labour of changing the head gasket (pulling the head off) and milling the head flat again is worth far more than a 2nd hand motor and half the value of the car... sell it... unless glen wants to pull it apart at mates rates

Trade it in to Australian Fleet sales... prolly give you $2k for it... according to their tv ads anyway...
unless someone here wants to buy it as a shell for a project

people say its the head gasket which it probably is aswell..
but i say piston rings. as its happened to me.. got the head/gasket fixed machined cleaned flushed.
but still blew smoke and idled funny then 2 weeks later after the fix.. the cylinder seized ran on 3 cyl.. and then gg..
and thas with the headgasket fixed reco head n all.
could be true in his case as well but thats more of a worse case scenario than head gasket change in terms of rebuild cost...
either way.. because of the cars value itself is not even worth investigating getting the engine fixed
