car broke down :( what am i looking at?
arghh... my car, a civic (ef?) its a 89 gl hatch just brokedown, i'm hoping u guys could help me understand what's going on.
i was driving along and heard some wierld noises, like some screech/rustling sound, den it got louder, den a 'pop'. I pulled into a small lane and off-ed the engine.
there was fluid coming down the left side, initially it was clear like water, and later the fluid was greenish, so i'm thinking its coolant?
i pop up the hood and there is a bit of steam coming off near the belts on the left of the engine, looking from below, the fluids all coming from the left side.
since i thot its the coolant, i had a look at the coolant reserviour and it is still full.
so i'm guessing water pump? or some radiator hose gone?
i'm not too good with cars but the main radiator hose at the top from the radiator to the engine is still intact, but i noticed a hose about 2cm diameter coming from near the end of the air intake that was not connected to anything. also on the right of the engine i noticed an open metal tube.
what hose is this?!? and normally should it fit into that open tube? i noticed the area around the tube was wet, but there was no fluid on the ground from the right side.
i'll be getting the car towed and looked at later today, but i'm curious to what happened and what i can expect.

Throw a couple of pics up.

where abouts was it leaking ?

Not sure i can explain all your symptons but..
clear then green fluid, plus steam- that def sounds like radiator hose (or the core itself) busted. There will be another hose diaganolly opposite the one you have said is not broken (ie will be one on the bottom of the radiator) and it should be connected to the engine block. See if it is split or not connected. (it might be the pipe and hole you have already described, but maybe not). Remember, the cooling system is pressurized, so if a hose came off (esp if you were travelling at speed) it would spray everyhere except straight down..
currently onda-less...but i do have an Evo 6.5

yeah, seems like the water pump, since it was the weekend i got one of those mobile mechanics to take a look... he said new tensioner, timing belt and water pump, totalling $11-12 hundred -_-''' ... does the other stuff get affected by the water pump?!? or can i just get away with a new water pump?

they usually do timing belt along with the water pump, cause the timing belt has to come off anyway, saves money later on

thats way to expensive
tentioner should not need replacing
$450 to $650 max I recon, probably even at a dealer

bro ur driving an 4th gen civic yeah?
GL model of this shape?!?

if it is ECU-MAN is right...its an ED6
u've most likely got a d15b4 dual carb...the intake manifold has a line running through it for the coolant...i think thats what u mean about the open tube...it sounds like ur waterpump have given up...when ur over heating the weakest point in the cooling system gives in...and in this case it may be that hose that u heard 'pop'

as for the cost of this repair...i think u've been quoted a highly inflated price...
i suggest u get some more quotes from different repairers...
2 weeks ago the head of my motor finally went goneskies...my mech said it was about 1100 to get it repaired...but instead i got a new motor with a lot lower K's and had it put in...it was a much cheaper option...

yup, thats the one, d15b4. good to hear that its 450-650 max -_-'''.... i'll try and update on wat happens.. cheers guys!

my civic had a similar problem, and it ended up being the water pump. i know my mechanic pretty well and he replaced the water pump for $30. it shouldnt cause too much damage when it gives out unless you were pushing it way past when it blew. mine just sprayed coolant and water into the engine bay and let off a little steam.
@cristian - EDs seem to have really piss weak heads, mine blew a while ago too. spent $600 repairing that, and then had to spend another $600 getting the pistons re-ringed >.<.
Current Performance Modifications to ED6:
not telling, but it involves a semi-quad carb setup, and lots and lots of compression.
