    Angry Turbo Compliance

I'm getting a turbo in my civic in a few weeks time, but I'm pretty sure my insurance won't insure me as it won't be legal.

I got my P’s 1 ½ years ago so I still have to comply with the power to weight ratio (125kw:1000kg.)

    First of all;

    1) When they test turbo charged cars for rwc and compliance, do they count the fly wheel & in my case, front wheel drive kw? I think the fly wheel will be around 220-250kw and the front, 160kw.

    2) How do they measure the weight of the car, is it just the weight that’s displayed on the rego sticker?
    3) Even if I do get an engineer’s certificate, I’m still f’d right?

Since my car’s exactly 1 tonne I’m pretty much screwed. So if I can’t get turbo my car legally I might just get an engine swap and turbo later

    What engine you got??

    How much boost you runnin??

to get 160 kws you'd need a b16 with about 9 ish pounds of boost.

If you've just got the d15/16 and you run 9 ish pounds you'll end up with abotu 110 kws at the front wheels.

have a look under the bonnet and find the plate with the vin number ect. If it says Catagory MA... you can not legally turbo it. I know its a stupid rule cuase most honda's do have this and in queensland it is one of the guidelines for getting a turbo mod plate (car has to be the right catagory). You can get a dodgey mod plate for it though... some places dont worry about it as long as the turbo is done right

Mine says MA, can I just scrub it off?? LOL, probably not. Mine is a D16 engine, but the guy is gonna mod it a bit so it can get 160kw. BTW is it better to use a Garrett or one of the Skyline R32 Twin turbo's? Cos atm I'm w/ the Skyline one

depends on your internals your going to use, computer etc etc.
the gtr turbos are okay, but make sure its in a good condition if not, recondition the turbo, to the N1 spec. bigger turbine wheel and boost response is good depending on your engine block work.

other hand the gt28r ball bearing is a good choice also.
with good response, not laggy much and boost comes early.

Apparently the turbo im using is going to be brand new, but i don't think so considering what I'm paying-- I'll get back to you on that.

Last of all, even with engineering cert. it's still not legal huh. Approx. how much extra does it cost to get the certificate in melb?

If it is not legal, the engineer won't give you a cert for it. Even if you get it legal and register it, it's still over the power to weight ratio for P platers. Not sure if the engineer will state estimated power and weight in the documents, but if he does, then vicroads can easily calculate the power to weight ratio from that.

Edit: If you got your P after 1st July 2007, then NO turbo cars for you.

kazam: Talk to your local traffic authority. They know better then ozhonda.

As for power to weight I'll doubt you'll get 160 atw with an unopened d series engine running under 10 pound.

I stand corrected, VIC just changed to the same prohibitions as NSW from 1st July 2007 onwards.

Read this for what is allowed and prohibited:

    NSW: http://163.189.7.150/licensing/getti...ns.html?llid=4
