I'm thinking of getting that double din kit and one of these (probably kit 4) http://www.mechatroniks.com/wrx/ordering.html
A mini ITX motherboard should be able to fit behind the screen and then the only problem would be the location of a dvd drive.
Otherwise i might mold a lilliput screen into the compartment with the door being able to cover it.
Also my dealer had no idea about the double din kit, They told me some custom audio specialists might have them though. will have to check some out
edit: how much did the double din kit cost from USA?
