Suspension: Bump Stops, Tyres, Cambers, Rubbing
hey yall,
i wasted $1200+600+200 = $2000 for an install on my EK1 featuring: Koni Yellow (maxxed stiffed settings), 1.5inch King Lows, removed guards.
NOW, when i drive alone turning at about 20kmh on roundabouts - it fu#$%#!!!! rubs on the body somewhere...should i take it back to the mechanic and have him bash in this part of the body fibreglass so it doesnt touch.
WHEN i have 4 people in the car, turning corners at 20kmh almost a full lock RUBBBBBBBBBBBS like heck on the same spot.
ALSO, my mechanic says lowered cars will have more tyre wear, well duh cause of the angle stuff. Are cambers really THAT necessary and what exactly do i need in terms of jacking and stands and stuff to do it myself. (no more money to get mechanic to do it).
ALSO, my mechanic didnt install BUMP STOPS cause the koni yellows didnt come with any and my old ones were shattereed - he recons the yellows are made to work without bump stops - are my shocks gonna get fu@((!!! up faster without the stops?
Any help? i dont have tools lol, just a damn screw driver set. - supercheap/repco for jacks and stuff?

$2k all up ? IF you paid me or another DIY guy on here you would of saved about....$900 lol.
Anyway if the car is rubbing it is more than likely the tyres rubbing the inner part of the wheel space. Usually on the body of the car or the rear bumper corner.
Lowered cars do have more tyre wear , but not much. Camber kits are needed when you excessively lower a car (say 2 inches or more).
Do not attempt to fix this issue yourself as i think you might stuff something up. Pay someone to fix it for you / check it out.
Also , if those white wheels are yours then they probably are too wide and hence the scrubbing. You can fix this by putting smaller wheels on.

Re the bump stops. When lowering I've always used polyuethane (sp) bump stops as they are smaller and better quaility. Might wanna get a 2nd opinion before taking it back to get fixed under wty.
Your wheels may also be too wide or have an incompatible offset which only is a problem when lowered.
Usually rubbing when turning is the tyre rubbing on the front plastic splash guards inside the wheel arch. It is common to have them removed or I once cut a hole in mine (not this car) to allow the tyre not to rub in that spot.
I also think you got riped. You could have got coilovers installed for that price and with that you ride height adjustment, perfect when things rub unexpectedly.

your problem is the springs are too soft.i cant remember if you said it rubs when its just you,but if it does then your springs are too low....and if it rubs ridiculously when people are in,then your springs are also too soft,the weight of them pushes down on the soft springs and makes more scrubbing.
get some stiffer,higher springs.smaller rims would help,getting your gaurds rolled can also help,but id start at the springs

dude u didnt put 2K down the drain. konis are one of the most reputable brands in the world of shocks...i have had konis for the past year almost and have had no issues whatsoever... i also made sure my alloys were decent sized and the correct offset before i actually went out and got tyres.
ur only issue now is getting some bumpstops put on, and getting smaller wheels with higher offset (so it sits in more).
then u'll be laughing.

where exactly does it rub? that will help us determine what to be done.
in my ek with 18's it scrubbed like crazy till i rolled the guards and cut away the splash guard. it still scrubbed but no where near as much then i got front and rear big sway bars and it never scrubbed cos i had no body roll. it never scubbed after that. i had 18x7.5 with +45 offset.
sorry to say you got jipped $2K but the koni's are great!
bump stop will help stop the shock bottoming out and i would look into getting some. oem would be fine. its only a last resort to stop the shock bottoming out.

your rims are too wide. Get smaller wheels dude.
