Lower pressure (down to a limit) = More contact area but tyre will roll more and cause premature shoulder wear. Also, more heat generated and tyre temperature goes up quickly.

Higher pressure = slightly less contact area if pressure is too high. Less friction on the straights, less tyre roll means less shoulder wear (more efficient use of tyres).
