im think of doing a CAI on my eg SOHC vtec... n e ways, wondering what would be the "right" diameter of piping that i should use????

same as your throttle body size.

best to run a pipe in the form of a venturi - IE larger at the opening , then narrowing down to the throttle body size just beofre the throttle body ofcourse .
