Thankyou, but I would appreciate if you would stop fondling my knob everytime you get in my car.

Man there are some nasty knobs here...

Anyway. In response to the original question...

Jackie Stewart used to be famous for having a perfectly shaped and positioned gear knob. A lot of attention was given to getting it exactly to his liking.. And it obviously helped and many ppl that have driven his cars have commented on how much better gear shifting is in his cars.

    sometimes it 'feels' better

imo most of time its a appearance thing

i installed a short shifter and it is a lil stiffer changing gears coupled with a spoon gearknob(lightweight gearknob)

i then changed to a skunk2 gearknob which is pretty weighty

now with the short shifter it 'feels' like shifting with more ease from the weight of a gearknob

i am quite happy with the way it is now.
with the short shifter is it normal for it to be almost be impossible to put it in first when the car is moving? i know with a shortshifter sometimes its harder for it to go into gear..

Just rev match in neutral with the clutch released, then you'll be able to put it into 1st.
