you can hear a deeper note with my ej8 once it kicks in wouldnt say its a huge difference... tell him to get a new engine like i am haha only way to truly appreciate it ..

my D16Y8 VTEC kicks in very loud n clear... only wit a pod filter no brand @ 5500rpm... esp in 2nd gear...

I'd hook up a light just to be sure. There's a DIY about it in the DIY section. If there was a loose cable the engine light would come on when it tries to engage vtec and realises it cant or even when he just turned the car on. One of the wires to my vtec solonoid came loose one day and triggered a code 22. I checked the wiring and found the problem pretty easily. Could be an oil pressure problem or something too

my ej8 gets a scream at 5500rpm.
no exhaust, but i can still hear it.

You would definitely be able to hear D16 screaming VTEC!!!!! when you have a good front headers,exhaust and basic pod filter.

Vtec change over would not be obvious with everything stock in the car.

the ej8 (ek civic coupe VTI) has a sohc d16, so its NOT a vtec engine. my mate has one also, he wasnt happy with the power so upgraded to a b16a.

wtf.. EJ8(civic vti coupe) is d16y8 which has sohc vtec.. What the hell are you talking about saying its not a vtec engine..lol..
