mute yes, blow fuse, not really, well at least i havent come across a deck that has had a blown fuse due to shorting out the speaker wires...

in the old days the sound would be distorted and the output chip would heat up that much that it blew, these days engineers from known manufacturers of head units have the output chips mute when a short on the speaker wire is detected...
