Apparently it is the CV joints...

I own a 90 integra, and only today did I notice a clunking kind of noise when I turned right. Anyhow, the old guy across the road said it was the CV joints, so I got under the thing and checked the boots, they were definitely cracked on both sides, and the one on the passenger side was leaking oily crap everywhere.

So now my question is... I have limited funds and will probably end up having to do this myself. So how long do I have before it is urgent. I am getting mixed responses, old man across the road said it could be months, and the guy I called who gave me the $900 quote said it needs to be done immediately.
The noise only began today.

well its recommned you get it change ASAP but you can drive with it for about week or two, for 2 brand new CV's only cost you about 300 from supercheap etc. 600 for labour thats a bit steeepp, get some other quotes im sure youll find cheaper.

the boots are CHEAP to replaced. lol even a road worthy repair wont add up to 900 for cv boot i've seen all bushings done + all boots for like 900

LOL a kit can cost as cheap as 80 bucks and you get all you need to change it man (grease, boot, tie, etc)

If you have; a massive 1/2" breaker bar (750mm), a quality 32mm socket, mallet, and a big ass flat head screw driver, and some research. You can definitely DIY.

Your mechanic is over charging by miles. A job that can only cost 200-400 with a decent amount on the side for profit from labour.

cost me 180(through a friend mechanic) for both left and right cv joints / shafts and then DIY.... mine was a OEM replacement with 1 year/20k warranty or something on the parts..

if in sydney
try sydney drive shafts.
look em up in the yellow pages, they are in the camperdown area.
$100 for exchange shafts

Im in sydney as well i know a place to get them reconiditioned 120ish each down near the liverpool area

i bought reconditioned shaft's(no need for trade in!) for my ek a while back
cost me about $110/side which included reconditioned joints, new boots, balancers and even a new spindle nut

they're in sydney but i'm pretty sure they're willing to ship them too

got mine done about august last year for about $400. that was for both sides brand new driveshafts too. 900 is definitely on the steep side of things

once the boots crack or tear, the grease escapes leaving the CVs running dry...metal on metal. its probably best to look at getting them replaced sooner rather than later.
