Firstly, if it is CV joints that turn out to be the problem, at 120,000km I am not totally sure i would go for new replacements. There are so many company's out there these days that rebuild Drive shafts/CV Joints, i believe this is the way i would go. Almost as good as new with big $ savings. Probably worth looking into.

Rebuilt drive shafts usually come complete - meaning reconditioned CV Joints on driveshafts and work on an exchange basis. This method is also a lot less labour intensive as it is just a matter of remove and replace driveshaft assemblies. In my experience they are as good as buying new for a lot less $$$. Living in Newcastle you should have no problems locating them.

Bit of an update, there is a bit of movement on the inside of one of the CV joints, so I will have to chase up replacements. Apart from that she is runnin fine.

$250 for one side Parts and Labor.

I have seen people get it down for as low as $170, honda wanted $750-$1000 so i was happy with $250.

funny though, saw a honda mechanic deliver 2 CRV's while i was there... they got this place to do their work... and no doubt pocketed the difference...

Haha, why am I not surprised?

Yeah, when CV joints wear out, it's normally on the outer joint. To recondition them, they rebuild them and install larger bearings. If they're doing it properly, they should re-machine the ball bearing track as well, but sometimes they don't do this, as it requires precision equipment to do it.

I've just finished an oil change, and while doing so inspected the CV shaft boots, etc, all looks good after ~97,000km. Both drive shafts have a small amount of end-float (when I grab it and pull back/forth), but i'm pretty sure that's normal?
