ur car has a factory limiter to prevent ur car from over-revving. no damage so long as u didnt hold it there for like 5 minutes

^^^ Nothing will happen. As NSPYRE said the limiter would have cut fuel off to the engine.. However it may be a different case if say, you're traveling at 120km/h and you've accidentally shifted down to the 2nd gear (not sure how that would be possible!).

the gearbox will force the engine to over-rev, the electronic rev limiter won't stop this because it happens mechanically
    it will bend something

from what i've seen on a friends RX-7 during a quarter mile run, he slammed it from red line in 3rd to 2nd cause he mis-shifted into 4th (still to this day do not know how he managed this) and all that happened was the rear wheels lock up until he realised wat had happened about 3 seconds later and put it back into 3rd.

after the run, we jacked her up, had a look and all was good from wat we cld see. got it back home and had it booked in to be inspected. no damage.
