Just bought a 40th Anniv Civic and I can't help thinking I got ripped off a little bit

    This was my deal:
    Civic 40th VTi
    - Flat paint (white)
    - Auto
which has the following in package
    - mats
    - 15" alloys
    - parking assist
    - exhaust tips
    - fog lights
    - 1 year rego

    I got the following added
    - extended warranty
    - touch up paint
    - luggage area protection
    - pollen filter

    for $28055

The salesguy had the following tricks:

    - claimed that 40th anniversary cars were very popular and a lot have been sold even though it's only the first week into the promotion.
    - claimed that white was very popular and out of the 400 odd Oz cars designated as 40th anniversary, their dealership only got 11, and had only 1 white left that was unspoken for.
    - an official looking Honda memo that states the dealer will just get $500 per car for the anniversary editions (which he claims is confidential but it was in a folder with his other materials...)
    - claimed that the purchase price was not movable because of Honda Australia locking them into a small margin, and that they had just had a meeting with Honda HQ about it to voice their exasperation
    - claimed that he just wanted to make the sales numbers, and was making minimal money on it.
    - claimed that they are still on the way here, so won't be available till end of Oct (2009).

I know these are pretty standard excuses, but I would like to know if there is any basis in truth, if there are any truthful anonymous Honda salespersons on this forum? Is the 40th Anniv promotion pretty popular? The guy was convincing but all good salespeople are. He pretty much didn't want to budge from the advertised anniversary price. When I called him out on the $895 for extended warranty, he said he would give it to me "at cost which was $750". Does that sound right?

In hindsight, I should have stuck to my guns and walked out to see if another dealer could beat the deal.
I have a feeling there was another $1k in there to play with??

I also did have a trade in, and got a slightly better than red-book trade-in value for it (private sale value obviously much higher, but I doubt I could have sold this car easily, as it had high mileage and subtle engine problems). I'm pretty sure they didn't take any sort of hit on the trade in though, as I'm sure they will make their margin on the resale.

Anyway, just comparing notes and keeping prospective buyers informed. I wish I had found this site beforehand

the three delears here in sa that i have spoken with have all said exactly the same thing... only one was willing to give me a quote and he would only budge $500 on the price saying that there was nothing in it for them

i do and dont believe them because i know thats what they would say if it wasn't true... but it doesnt make sense to sell a car at cost!

one other thing that two of the dealerships said was that honda australia was making them 'absorb' the extra costs included in the 40th anniversary edition... so not sure what to believe atm

Finally had the chance to speak to a dealer and she went down to $27k for the Ann edition with metalic paint pretty easy... she wouldn't go down to 26 at all.. So I'm thinking 26k is achievable with some more haggling

most of what u have been told is true!

the sales guy told u how it is and id tell u the same stuff!

we are getting stuff all cars to sell and it sucks big time!
they are better value than a normal VTi.

you are dreaming if u think u could get another 1k discount.
why the hell would any dealer discount a good value car when they get stuff all cars from honda and everyone wants one?

u got a car so be happy as there will be alot of people who miss out!
im not biased, i just tell it how it is.

went to another dealership and thought i had it at 26.5k (only extra was metalic paint) but after speaking to his 'boss' couldnt do it....
i walked away after saying i couldnt go to 27k thinking he would ring me back saying he would do it at 26.5k but no call...

other dealership also said $27k was the cheapest....

this limited edition deal is good in my opinion for the alloys only....all the other 'extras' i can add on after market cheaper imo

but now im thinking about other cars if i cant get this one at the right price

    got quoted from honda paramatta

30k for VtiL Auto on white
    with
    fog light
    floor mat
    tint

what do you think?..i think i can still ask more freebies...

  11. #599
ended up getting the civic anniversary edition in black for 27k ..
i was on the verge of signing for the impreza rx but salesguy wouldnt go to straight 30k for the auto.. only 30.5.. would have gotten it over the honda for the price just based on the drive alone.. but damn the dash was ugly/outdated

the subaru guy rang me twice while i was negotiating at honda and he still wouldnt go down to the 30k mark

anyways... honda wouldnt move on the 27k price mark..
tried to get at least the first service free ... but nothing

didnt realise but my wife had previously worked with the finance guy at honda... and after the sale was done he showed us the 'sales board' and explained that we had bought the 9th civic anniversary edition (out of 10 allocated to the dealership) and the last black one since the promotion started...and about 5 accords anniversary edition

also interesting that they had sold 6 cars on a tuesday the 6th .. after the long weekend i guess..

also the guy that had sold us the civic had the most sales with 7...
also.. 16 hondas had been sold since the start of the month and 5 of those financed through honda finance

they tried to sell me the window tint for $495 and a parrot bluetooth hands free kit for $900 plus all that crap 'protection' starting at $700 going up to $2k

ive organised window tint at $250 at a local place here .. darkest legal tint
and also a nice hands free kit at tonkins for $320 is next to be done

all in all im happy with my purchase and hope i have a good run with my first honda

thanks to everyone who has put up their thoughts and experiences

The first service for any Honda car is generally free isn't it?
