    Gearbox synchro

    Hey guys,

    What's the difference between a Synchro & a Synchro Sleeve ?

When one refers to "replacing your Synchros" what part would they be referring to?

If i have shifting problems between 3rd n 4th, what part would i replace ? One or the other or both ?

The synchro ring is the "brake pad" i.e the part that slows the gear down

The synchro sleeve is the part that "engages" the synchro teeth on the gear, locking them together.

The synchro ring will wear down first (the inside brake pads of it). When this is worn down, it cannot slow the gear down sufficiently, hence when the synchro sleeve tries to engage the synchro teeth on the gear, there is a crunching sound, as the spinning speed of the sleeve and gear are not the same.

As for replacements, if you're having problems shifting and there is crunching sounds, it is 99% probability you will need to change the synchro ring. For the synchro sleeve, you will have to look at the inside teeth on the sleeve and see if they are worn or not.

MFactory carries Carbon Moly Synchros specifically designed for quicker and more precise shifting and prolongs the life of your gear set at an affordable price.

maybe look at switching ur oil for a thicker substance? im having a similar issue between 2nd and 3rd and 4th to 5th, but it doesnt do it when the engine is cold so i think its cos the gb oil is thick, so im going to try the oil before the synchros! just thought that might enlighten you.

No - for Honda Transmissions, you really shouldn't be using a "thick" gearbox oil.
If you have a synchro issue, you're only masking it by using oil which could be further detrimental to your gears.

Thanks e240. How do the Synchrotech synchros stack up against mfactory ?

Easy - Quality & price. MFactory is a specialised manufacturer of performance transmissions, MFactory not just another reseller, which is often the case online - we don't simply repackage items from chinese manufacturers.

Unlike resellers, MFactory researches, design, test and then manufacture the end product to our specification

We only promote products that we know will compliment our gears.

    Price - Comparing 3-5 from synchrotech - Inclusive of shipping - >USD$260
Ours are landed for under AUD$200 @ today's exchange rate.

Why so competitive? You get the items from us shipped directly from our factory, not sent via the US or any other country.

Also, I'm here, in AU - on the forum, easily contactable - and I have MFactory resources backing me up if customers have any queries or require support.

Finally, when you buy MFactory, you're helping out a local racer fund his campaign ..LOL

Thicker oil won't hurt the gears just because it's thicker, but any viscosity can damage the gear box if it's not appropriately formulated for the specific application.

Isn't there a site rule relating to commercial posts?

e240: Not sure what product you found for $260, but comparing the B16 3, 4 + 5 Carbon synchro set both brands are priced at ~$180AUD shipped.

This is why I was curious as to the difference between the brands.

Supporting a local works for me though

I'll PM you with further queries.

Thanks Buddy. You need to add shipping to the price of the item. Thats the killer and thats where we can offer a better deal.

    Ok...I've had my fun...

MFactory is actually a development partner with Synchrotech (they are also one of our Official MFactory North American Installers) and we have developed several innovative products/solutions for Honda/Acura together, such as the newer generation Carbon Synchro Rings, as well as supplying a lot of West Coast Honda Dealerships with our transmissions/products.

Combined, we have over 20 years of experience with the Honda Transmission and Racing Honda's. Honda of America (and their associated companies) would not outsource to us otherwise. Practical experience, not just theories.

But, getting it through MFactory AU will save you on shipping.

I just asked the question because the post read like an advertisement. Sorry if my understanding of the forum rules is not completely up to speed...
