so he own the workshop or not? or he is just one of the guys that work there

strictly speaking you dont pay him.. he is doing it as favor for you. no money change hand.

to be honest i dont know why he want to do that (installing at home) and later fix it at his workshop (makes no sense to me as it is always easier to install sussy in a hoist and especially if he doesnt get paid, i am sure working in a hoist is faster than working using a jack! which saves more time... plus if he owns a workshop... he can open till whatever time he wants basically.. dedy at top one open late to do favor for his friends but always done all work at his workshops)

if i were your mechanic i will
    - do it in my workshop where i have all the tools and proper lighting (especially is dark at night even though you use lighting but it is still dark)
    - i cover myself as a mechanic as if something happen when i fix someone else car by public liability insurance cover. i dont know any mechanic is covered by doing other than premise that he supposed doing the job
    - involving someone that is not a mechanic like yourself. and if something happen, he will probably just put the blame on you.

    your problem could be
    - maybe the tension spring might be the problem if you hear a "ding" sound
    - maybe not enough grease on the bearing if you hear the clicking sound.

maybe you should ask dedy at top one to have a look at it. but that is what roughly what he said. dont quote me on that, i am just roughly summing up what could be the problem. best to speak to him being the real mechanic as i am not a mechanic either..
